Characteristic of PTFE

Heat resistance property: It is able to work stably between -180° C to +260° C.

Excellent non-sticky property--it easier to remove those like resin, dopes, oil and other sticky things.

Good mechanical property with no distortion and low friction coefficient Excellent insulation property.

Materials like carbon, graphite and glass fiber can be flled.

Corrosion resistance.

It's not easy to aging.

Good tensile strength.

Abrasion resistance.

Manufacturing Process of PTFE

Paste Preparation: PTFE resin is blended with a suitable lubricant to form a uniform paste, which facilitates smooth processing.

Extrusion: The paste is extruded through a precision die to form a continuous tape or film, shaping it into the desired thickness and width.

Calendaring: The extruded material passes through a series of rollers to ensure a consistent thickness and a smooth, even surface.

Sintering: The tape is then subjected to high-temperature sintering, which fuses the PTFE particles together and effectively removes the lubricant, enhancing the tape's strength and non-stick properties.

Finishing: After cooling, the tape undergoes quality inspection before being wound onto rolls for packaging and distribution.

Usage of PTFE

Lubricant
PTFE is used as dry lubrication in areas where low friction is required, with cookware coating being one of them. PTFE can reduce the friction effectively between surfaces and it gives an additional protection layer against corrosive substances as well. The WD-40 spray with PTFE is used for chain lubrication. It leaves a thin film on the chain so that it can resist dirt and oil.

Piping/tubing
Teflon coating is on the surface of the piping/tubing system in facilities that handle highly corrosive fluid. The Teflon coating on the inner surface of valves, pumps, tees, fittings, and every joint in the piping system is crucial for it prevents the risk of fluid leakage. The leakage of corrosive fluid is hazardous to both the equipment and the staff members in the working area.

Fabric/textile
One of the benefits we haven't mentioned yet is the hydrophobic property. Teflon is water repellent and can easily coat fibers. Outdoor clothing brands use the technology to design garments and shoe fabrics to make water-repellent products.

Ammunition
The best known fluoropolymer is polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE), and it exhibits outstanding resistance to chemical, resists all chemicals except fluorine gas, chlorine trifuloride, and molten alkali metals. But when in high temperature, PCTFE is slightly susceptible to ammonia and chlorine gas.

FAQ

Q: What are the main properties of PTFE?

A: PTFE has excellent high - temperature resistance, capable of withstanding continuous use at temperatures up to 260°C. It has a low friction coefficient, good chemical resistance, and is hydrophobic. It also has high electrical insulation and good thermal stability.

Q: What are the common applications of PTFE?

A: In the industrial field, it is used for lining pipes and fittings, gaskets and seals, and coatings for wires and cables.
In the food - processing industry, it is used in conveyor belts because of its non - stick and high - temperature - resistant properties.
In the medical field, it is used in catheters and grafts due to its biocompatibility and inert nature.
It is also widely used in non - stick cookware.

Q: How to improve the performance of PTFE?

A: The performance of PTFE can be improved by adding fillers. For example, adding ceramic fillers can improve its wear resistance, and adding carbon can make it more wear - resistant and antistatic. Surface treatment methods such as sodium treatment can also be used to improve its surface energy and make it easier to bond with other materials.

Q: How is PTFE produced?

A: PTFE is produced by the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) monomers. The main production methods include free - radical polymerization, suspension polymerization, and emulsion polymerization. After polymerization, the fine powder of PTFE is further processed, such as being agglomerated into granules or pellets, and then molded or extruded into various shapes.

Q: What is the maximum operating temperature for PTFE?

A: PTFE can withstand continuous operating temperatures of 150-200°C, and intermittently up to 250°C.

Q: What is the minimum operating temperature for PTFE?

A: PTFE can be used in cryogenic applications, with minimum operating temperatures well into the cryogenic range around -195°C.

Q: Is PTFE resistant to chemicals?

A: Yes, PTFE is chemically inert and resistant to most chemicals, except for fluorine and chlorine trifluoride and molten alkali metals at high temperatures and pressures.

Q: Does PTFE melt?

A: No, PTFE does not melt, but it softens at 327°C and decomposes at 400°C, with the C-F bond fracturing at higher temperatures.
